Vertical Drains

Vertical drains are used to accelerate the consolidation and reduce the consolidation period such that it fits within regular construction schedules. It also makes it possible to control and design for relative strict residual settlement requirements. The acceleration of the consolidation process has also the advantage that a faster lifting schedule of an embankment can be used. The strength of the subsoil has a relation with the degree of consolidation (adjustment of the subsoil to the placed load).

Vertical drain technology consists of installing prefabricated drains in the ground, which accelerate the consolidation of impervious soils. Vertical drains are flat, plastic, flexible cables with round or oval cross–section, which, when installed in a suitable spacing, dozens of times increase the permeability of the soil. In order to accelerate the consolidation, together with vertical drainage temporary load embankment is used. Vertical drainage is most commonly used in cohesive soils under road embankments or parking lots. Since Verti-Drain is produced with filter materials having AOS suitable for the improvement of soft soil, filter clogging can be prevented over a long term. Verti-Drain is resistant to friction and scratching caused during its installation and also has a physically durable structure with a high strength. Verti-Drain has a high resistance to bacteria and chemicals. Verti-Drain is materially and ecologically stable since it is made of polymers which don’t cause contaminants.

Applications of Vertical Drain

Vertical Drain is applied for speeding up the consolidation of soft ground, accordingly reducing a construction time, for various infrastructure and land development projects including;

Construction of seaports, airports, roads & railways

Construction of oil & gas facilities, power and chemical plants

Improvement of dredged clay fill

Reclamation and bank revetment

Land development for residential and industrial complex

Advantages of Vertical Drain

1.Economy –– the main idea of vertical drain technology, that is possibly maximum use of the soil bearing capacity, makes the VD technology one of the most economically beneficial soil improvement methods;

2.Environmentally friendly – does not generate vibrations or noise;

3.Organically checked – the simplicity of implementation makes this technology efficient for the use in organic soil with high moisture content which has been thoroughly tested in various applications;

4.Scale of operation can be used for low bearing capacity cohesive soils with considerable thickness, even up to a depth of 50 m.
