Soil Nail & Guniting

Soil Nail and Guniting

Soil nailing and guniting are cost-effective techniques commonly adopted by slope designers to reinforce or stabilize common shallow slips of residual soil cut slopes or enhance slope stability when cut slopes are very high or steep with low or unsatisfactory factor of safety.

INTRODUCTION

The concept of Soil Nailing was first put into application in Malaysia in as late as 1985. Since then, its usage as means for slope stabilization has gained grater popularity and wider acceptance. Through these years, many projects on soil nailing have been completed locally and their performance was observed to be satisfactory.

Soil Nailing is a method of reinforcing is-situ soils by using passive inclusion to retain earth in excavations or to stabilise slopes. In soil nailing structures, the inclusions are generally steel bars grounded within drilled holes. A facing element, usually in the form of reinforced gunite blanket, gunite strips or individual pads, serves to integrate all the soil nail, forming the stabilizing and retaining structure.

SLOPE STABILISATION - THE VARIOUS DESIGN PATTERNS

Soil Nails - Gunite Retaining Walls:

Soil Nail-Gunite Retaining Wall System offers an excellent alternative to all the existing retaining wall systems such as R.E wall, R.C retaining wall, grib wall and others. The Soil Nail-Gunite Wall System excels over others in congested build-up areas where excavation behind walls is impossible or may impose great danger to existing buildings.

LEADING-EDGE SOIL NAILING CONTRACTORS

Soil nailing is an in-place reinforcement of the existing soil/rock at a site that utilizes steel tendons grouted into drilled holes to create a stable block. SB GeoTechnic, reinforced with wire mesh and/or reinforcing steel, is applied to the face of the excavation to secure the soil between the nails. Soil nailing is installed from the top down as an excavation is made in 4 to 6-foot lifts.

Soil nailing is used for the temporary support of excavations, construction of permanent retaining walls, and for the control of landslides. One of Malaysia’s most accomplished soil nailing contractors, SB GeoTechnic has successfully constructed soil nail walls in a variety of different soil conditions. Soil nailing is not recommended in cohesion less soil, organic soil or cuts below the water table.

Soil nail walls are usually built with smaller, easily mobilized equipment and without extensive steel fabrication. This minimizes the start-up time and makes soil nailing the best application for congested sites.
